Christa Murphy M.D.

From an early age, Christa Murphy knew that she wanted to be a doctor. She received her undergraduate degree in Chemistry with magna cum laude honors from Hope College.  Dr. Murphy received her MD designation (medical degree) from Wayne State Medical School and completed her specialty training as a Family Physician at Grand Rapids Medical Education and Research Center.  Dr. Murphy is board certified by the American Academy of Family Physicians.  She and her husband were the recipients of the prestigious Angels in Adoption Award by the US Congress for her work in promoting the adoption of children with HIV.

The Journey of Becoming

At the age of six years old, Dr. Christa Murphy dreamt of being a pediatrician with an office attached to her home so she could still care for her family.  After graduating from Hope College, she and her husband spent a year serving in Zambia, Africa at a mission hospital in Zimba, located in the country’s Southern Province. This is where her drive to use medicine as a tool to heal and bring hope to all members of a family was confirmed.  Dr. Murphy’s vision for healthcare has always been a patient-focused career. She has had many diverse experiences over the years as a healthcare provider and has practiced medicine not only in the US and Zambia but also served in other countries around the world caring for the needy and underserved.

Dr. Christa Murphy’s first years as a Family Physician were spent working in a local community health center until she and her growing family of seven moved overseas to do medical mission work and community outreach, partnering to provide primary care with local orphanages.  Tragedy struck and their family returned to the states four years later when her second-born daughter, Christianna, died suddenly of a rare heart condition. Through it all, God’s faithfulness has brought healing and hope not only to the Murphy family but others who have been touched through their story.

Choosing JOY

While serving as a physician at Holland Hospital’s Urgent Care Dr. Murphy has been meeting the diverse medical needs of the community and is excited to expand her services once again through Joy Family Health.  The vision for Joy Family Health is to restore joy to healthcare by providing simple, personalized, affordable health care.  Members will be treated like family; valued, respected, and listened to in an unrushed manner. When members contact her, they are met with understanding, compassion and will be heard, and cared for.  Dr. Murphy uses her training to advocate for, partner with, and serve men, women, and children as a doctor in a holistic approach to healthcare.

Having mothered a large family of eight children, she knows the importance of coordinated care for families. Committed to integrity and thoroughness with compassion and kindness in all she does, whether it’s homeschooling her children or caring for the needs of a neighbor, Dr. Murphy lives out her faith in the everyday. Dr. Christa Murphy’s hope is that the words of the ancient prophet Isaiah may be fulfilled through excellent, evidence-based medical practices given with care so “you may go out with joy and be led forth with peace.”  (Isaiah 55:12 NIV)
